
The Agency for the Management of the Education System assumed, as of February 1, 2026, the responsibilities previously assigned to the Directorate-General for School Administration, following the completion of the process of dissolving that body.
The extinction of DGAE This falls within the process of reorganizing the Public Administration and reforming the Education sector, as established in Order No. 919-A/2026, published in the Official Gazette on January 27th.
Competencies ensured by AGSE
With the integration of these responsibilities, AGSE becomes the entity responsible for... Management of administrative processes associated with the functioning of the education system., including matters related to human resources, administrative procedures and other areas previously under the responsibility of the Directorate-General for School Administration (DGAE), as defined in Decree-Law No. 99/2025, who created the Agency.
The assumption of these functions by AGSE ensures that continuity of services and the ongoing procedures, aiming to ensure a more integrated and centralized management model.

Contacts and follow-up
Within this transition, all contacts and communications related to the areas previously handled by the DGAE should now be carried out through the DGAE. together with AGSE, preferably through the official channels provided for this purpose, namely E72.

The creation of AGSE aims to simplify and centralize the management of the education system, promoting greater administrative efficiency, reducing institutional fragmentation, and improving the service provided to educational communities, ensuring a more effective and coordinated response to the system's needs.
